NOW THAT THE INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL TERRA COTTA WARRIORS:Guardians of China's First Emperor exhibition has closed and
gone on the road acros's the country, we can look more to the
future. It will be a challenge to duplicate the excitement generated
by the Warriors, but I believe our upcoming lineup of
seven exhibits will be very worthwhile. It represents a rich mix
of subjects from the Art of the Samurai to impressive collections
of art from Latin America, Africa, New Guinea, and Italy - with
Jewels of the Vatican and a small but elegant exhibition of Michelangelo.
With the current economic situation, our exhibit
schedule, while exciting, is wisely conservative from a budgetary
point of view. As revenue becomes more challenging, it
has never been more important to recognize our ten Affiliate
Councils. Organized around a specific interest, they include
strictly volunteering at various events for the Bowers, such as
our Bells; and our Docents, who are invaluable in their support
of the school tours, curriculum guides, and popular Family
Guides. Other Affiliates focus on aspects of collecting and
supporting the Bowers collections. Our Bead Society holds an
annual Bead Bazaar and sponsors lectures such as that of world
famous photojournalists, Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher.
Our Collectors Council has purchased items for the collection
as well as sponsored several excellent programs.
